Description
Julia Child was unique, but she was also average. Before she became known to millions of PBS television viewers as "The French Chef," and was basically the person who changed the way Americans saw food and who created cooking on TV as a spectator sport, Child was a typical child-of-money from Pasadena, Calif., where Republicans ruled the roost and social graces were the product of a good reading of Emily Post. In fact, Child's father, proudly wearing his GOP red, white and blue, would become a stalwart supporter of Sen. Joseph McCarthy. Julia worked in the foreign service as a secretary and ended up meeting a dedicated embassy drone named Paul Child while both were serving the United States in Paris. It was the heady era after World War II, when rebuilding was the catchphrase. They married, and she was determined to do something with her time. Making hats wasn't as much fun as it sounded, so Julia enrolled at the Cordon Bleu cooking school. Her observation was that the French were really lucky--they got to eat French food every day.
